Precast concrete offers the important benefit of having a single-source supplier, but not all situations allow an entire structure to be built of precast; it is common for portions of a structure to consist of precast while others areas are constructed of traditional building materials.
These architectural and/or structural elements include elevator and stair shafts, large-scale columns, stadium risers, and shear walls. Shear walls are used as a component in a lateral force resisting system specifically constructed to resist seismic forces.
